Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as an escape.

There are no happy endings.
Endings are the saddest part.
So just give me a happy middle
and a very happy start.

Letter to graduating high school seniors

Found this little treasure from my AP English teacher while digging through stuff from high school.

Dear Students,

My hope for you is that you will not be careless with your life, but instead you will find the truest kind of happiness that comes from loving your work and loving others, not from the reward of work and being loved by others. The secret to making peace with all life’s uncertainties begins by making peace with your inner uncertainties. You are all so gifted and capable of making significant contributions to the world around you, but I hope you’ll forget you’re a celebrity and do it just for the joy of doing it. If you want to know what that feels like, I recommend the following homework which may lead us all out of the “celebrity culture” and out of the “culture of acquisition.” Everyday do something good anonymously.

For the world’s sake, and for your sake too, I hope all of you do your homework.

Love,

Dr. E.
